Aging out of foster care statistics canada. One in five become homeless, only half graduate from high school. It is both the experience of being in child protection, and the transitions from protection to independence, that account for many of these problems. New census data released last week reported some 43,880 youth in foster care in 2016, a decline of about 4,000 from the 47,890 young people statistics canada counted.

The canadian observatory on homelessness has found that across canada, 40 to 50 percent of all homeless youth aged 13 to 24 were at some point in the provincial foster care system. One canadian study ( trocmé, fallon, maclaurin, & neves, 2005 ) connected this increase to greater recognition and reported cases of neglect over the last decade. 25% will be involved in the justice system within 2 years of leaving foster care.

The national household survey 2011 data approximates that nearly half of the foster children under age 14 in canada are indigenous. While local statistics are hard to come by for a population no longer under the city's care, nationally, one in four of the 20,000 foster care youth who age out of the child welfare system each year are incarcerated within two years; What happens to kids when they age out of the foster care system.

As the statistics show, many foster kids are aging out of the system and have nowhere to turn. About 26,000 young people age out of the foster care system every year. The wards remain under the care of the government until they age out of care. this age is different.

This program provides grants of up to $5,500 per program year to former b.c. Yet society is failing to address this pipeline to homelessness. 71% of young women will be pregnant by age 21.

After reaching the age of 18, 20% of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. Under 3% will earn a college degree. As far back as 1997, concerns about young people leaving care and transitioning to adulthood have been raised.
